Know your pieces.
Each piece has a unique movement pattern and strategic purpose.

King
Moves one square in any direction. Protect your king at all costs.
♕
Queen
Moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
♖
Rook
Moves any distance horizontally or vertically, provided the path is clear.
♗
Bishop
Moves diagonally across the board, staying on the same square colour.
♘
Knight
Moves in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces.

Pawn
Moves forward, normally one square, but captures diagonally.

Check
Your king is attacked. You must make a legal move to escape check.

Checkmate
Your king is in check with no legal escape. The game ends immediately.
